About Oral Sedation

As a premier, modern dental office, MINT dentistry is proud to offer effective and safe solutions to ease your dental phobias and anxieties, so you can obtain the beautiful, healthy smile you want while you're relaxed and comfortable. Our team at MINT dentistry in Fort Worth, TX recommends oral-conscious sedation for longer procedures and bi-annual cleanings to ensure your visit is more comfortable. Oral-conscious sedation involves taking a prescription medication prior to your visit. The medication will keep you awake and capable of following directions while still relaxed. To learn more about sedation dentistry or to find out if you are a candidate, contact us in Fort Worth, TX to schedule a consultative appointment.

Best Candidates

MINT dentistry in Fort Worth, TX offers oral-conscious sedation for both children and adults who have dentophobia (a fear of the dentist). Before you are prescribed a medication for oral-conscious sedation, our team will need to complete a thorough consultation to determine if you are a good candidate. We will review your medical history, current medications, and other factors to ensure you can safely take an anti-anxiety medication and decide which type will be best for your needs. Oral sedation may not be performed if you have breathing or heart problems, you are pregnant, or you had a reaction to benzodiazepines or other anti-anxiety medications.

What to Expect

There's several different options for oral-conscious sedation medication. The type recommended by MINT dentistry will depend on your level of anxiety, your physical health, what procedure is being performed, and the estimated length of your appointment. Your medication will be prescribed during your consultation, so you can have it filled before your procedure. Since you need to take it before arriving, you should arrange to have a friend or family member take you to your appointment. With light sedation, you will remain relaxed but awake. With moderate sedation, you will also stay conscious, but you may think you were asleep because you may not remember what happened. You may fall into a light sleep but you should wake up easily. Your team will make sure you feel safe and comfortable during your visit.

Treatment Aftercare

Side effect and recovery from sedation will depend on the medication you were prescribed. You will need to arrange for a friend or family member drive you home from our office and stay with you for at least 2 – 4 hours while the medication wears off. Your dentist will warn you about possible side effects from the specific medication prescribed for you. Most commonly, patients experience temporary headaches, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting after oral-conscious sedation. The risk of nausea and vomiting can be reduced by having a light meal before taking the medication and eating a snack about one hour after your procedure. If you are concerned about symptoms, please contact our office for further instructions.

The MINT Commitment

If you have dental insurance, our front office will contact your carrier to clarify your coverage for oral-conscious sedation. Then we can better estimate your personal responsibility. If you don't have insurance, your team will tell you which payment methods are accepted by our office, including low-interest financing to make it easier to afford your sedation and dental care. If you cannot afford oral health procedures, dental treatments, and sedation, ask your dentist about the MINT Discount Plan.
