About Bone Grafting
Every team member at MINT dentistry in Fort Worth, TX is committed to giving you a dazzling smile with sexy teeth. However, your smile will only be dazzling if it's healthy first. The strength of your jawbone is imperative to your teeth and gums. At MINT dentistry in Fort Worth, TX, bone augmentation surgery is often recommended to prepare your jaw for dentures or implant placement surgery to replace weakened or missing teeth. Best Candidates
If your jawbone is weak, it may be because of certain oral conditions, like gum disease, or following a physical trauma to your face. Atrophy can also weaken the jawbone if a tooth is missing for a length of time without replacement by a restoration (dental implant, dentures, or a bridge). Bone augmentation surgery adds enough strength to your jaw to prepare it for dentures or a dental implant, but you need to understand how much healing time will be required. Some procedures can take months to complete, but you will have a stronger jaw that will support your dental implant or dentures for better oral health. To determine whether you require bone grafting surgery, your dental team will obtain digital x-rays and perform a comprehensive examination during your consultation.
What to Expect
To begin your procedure, your MINT dentistry team will ensure your total comfort by helping you settle in and then administering the method of sedation decided during your initial consultation. After the graft is prepared for placement, your team will attach it to your jawbone through incisions made in your gums. Proteins and collagens are added to the graft to help it integrate with the natural bone. When the graft(s) has been placed, the incisions in your gums will be closed and then, to prevent an infection, your mouth will be thoroughly cleaned.
Treatment Aftercare
It will take about 6 – 9 months for your mouth to heal while the graft integrates with the natural bone in your jaw. During this time, it's important to maintain a good home oral care routine with gentle brushing and flossing along with any products your MINT dentistry team recommends (like antibiotics or special mouthwashes). You need to attend follow-up appointments at MINT dentistry so your dentist can evaluate your healing and determine when you are able to receive dentures or a dental implant(s). To continuously improve your oral health, we recommend scheduling appointments for cleanings twice a year.
The MINT Commitment
MINT dentistry's front office will speak to your dental insurance company to understand your benefits and costs prior to scheduling your appointment. If it is deemed medically necessary, a portion of the expenses of bone grafting are usually covered. During your consultation and exam with the MINT dentistry team, we will estimate different options and explain ways that may make your treatment more affordable. The MINT dentistry team is committed to helping our patients afford their routine dental care and advanced procedures.
